Sewing Machinist

We’re looking for a sewing machinist ideally with experience working with stretch fabrics and jersey. Full time and freelance opportunities are available. Should be comfortable with lockstitch, overlock and coverstitch machines. You will join a small friendly team in our studio in Dalston, East London.

Usual Objections is a boutique sportswear brand. We make and sell our own swim and activewear from our studio in Dalston, London, and also offer sampling and manufacturing services to other fashion and sports brands from contour to outerwear in stretch.  

About the role

You’ll be joining a small but busy studio working as a sewing machinist on our own sportswear as well as client projects for sampling and production - making swim, run, and activewear garments. You will be supported by a Lead Machinist and work alongside our creative director and production assistance.  

 

Duties include:

  • Cutting fabrics

  • Sewing garments (swimwear/t-shirts/shorts/sweatshirts/sweatpants) for production

  • Check finished work against pattern / instructions

  • Quality control of production pieces

  • Change threads on machines

  • Assist with sampling of new garments

  • Feedback relating to patterns / technical sheets and construction methods where relevant

An ideal candidate:

  • Be an experienced machinist
  • Have accurate sewing skills and excellent attention to detail
  • Experience with industrial sewing machines and ideally with stretch/jersey fabrics, but we can also provide training
  • Good communication skills
  • Work as part of a team

Additional information:

  • Machines used: lockstitch, coverstitch, overlocker, flatlock, bartackM
  • Permanent position at £26k per year with 25 days annual leave + bank holidays.
  • Freelance £13.15 p/hour
  • Work from our studio in Dalston, East London
  • Flexible working hours if needed.
  • Must have right to work in UK
